ENGLISH UNIT 6: A LONG TIME AGO


Dear Parents,

Your child is about to start Unit 6. The main topic of this unit is the prehistoric past. In the unit your child will learn how to talk about what prehistoric people and animals looked like and what they could do. He/she will also talk about some objects used in prehistory. He/She will be introduced to this language through episode 6 of the exciting adventure story A walk with dinosaurs, a song and a grammar rap: I went to a museum.

In Unit 6 your child will learn about fossils, dinosaurs and Neanderthal man. Your child will complete his/her own ‘My Little Fact File of Neanderthals’ to reinforce this learning. Your child will also learn about prehistoric places in Britain and play a game to practise saying large numbers.

In this unit your child will have the opportunity to read and write questions and answers about prehistoric people, animals and fossils. Your child will also read short texts about dinosaurs and fossils and write a short text about a trip to a museum, following a model.

SCIENCE UNIT 7: MACHINES


Dear Parents,

Your child is about to start unit 7. The topic of this unit is Machines. In this unit, your child will:

·learn to identify a machine and classify machines as simple machines and complex machines
·learn to recognise some simple machines, how some work and identify some simple machines in your everyday life
·learn to identify some commonly used complex machines and recognises the importance of certain complex machines in your everyday life
·learn to recognise what certain complex machines are used for
·learn to identify some parts of a bicycle
·learn to understand how the parts of the bicycle work together to make the bicycle function
·learn to recognise how the bicycle has changed over time
·learn to listen to, read and understand a story about machines
·learn to write a simple text about an important invention

Additionally in this unit, your child will investigate how a pulley works.

ENGLISH UNIT 5: AMAZING NATURE


Dear Parents,

Your child is about to start Unit 5. The main topic of this unit is nature. In the unit your child will learn how to talk about natural features and compare and contrast them. He/she will be introduced to this language through episode 5 of the exciting adventure story Race to the pole, a song and a grammar rap: I’d like to sail across the ocean.

In Unit 5 your child will learn about the North and South Poles and about icebergs. Your child will complete his/ her own ‘My Little Fact File of the North and South Poles’ to reinforce this learning. Your child will also learn about National Parks in Britain and learn a rhyme to practise specific English consonant sounds.

In this unit your child will have the opportunity to read and write questions and answers comparing people and places. Your child will also read short texts about natural features and write a short text about a national park or natural feature in their own country, following a model.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Your child is about to start unit 6. The topic of this unit is Energy. In this unit, your child will:

·learn to identify some different forms of energy and recognise that energy changes from one form to another
·learn to understands the importance of energy in our everyday lives
·learn to identify light as a form of energy and recognise some characteristics of light
·learn to identify sound as a form of energy and recognise some characteristics of sound
·learn to classify energy sources as renewable or non-renewable
·learn to identify some advantages of renewable energy
·learn to identify some disadvantages of non-renewable energy
·learn to listen to, read and understand a story about mirrors
·learn to write a simple text about how you use energy

Additionally in this unit, your child will investigate energy in things that are hot and cold as well as shadows and the way light interacts with objects.
